I met James only recently and was impressed by a striking tattoo that appears virtually branded on his right arm. It is around a foot long and is a succession of Cyrillic Russian letters. On questioning, he reveals that his writing arm bears the legend “Sergei Rachmaninov”, a symbol of how much he loves the great man, apparently. I wondered at the time – and have done since – whether I would sit through three hours of tattooing for a composer I loved. Someone with a shorter name, perhaps.
